Animal Unit - Learning Targets:
·         Identify the major types of animal cells and tissues.
·         Describe the major components and functions of animal body systems:
o   Skeletal, muscular, circulatory, respiratory, digestive, endocrine, nervous, reproductive, urinary/excretory, and immune/lymphatic.
·         Compare the major groups of animals. Describe the classification and important characteristics of each animal group. Be able to give examples of each.

Ch. 17 Learning Targets:
·         List each of the 7 major levels (taxa) in the hierarchy of taxonomy.
·         Describe the binomial nomenclature system of naming organisms. Write scientific names and explain how they are composed and properly written.
·         Explain how organisms are classified into a hierarchy of groups and subgroups based on similarities that reflect their evolutionary relationships.
o   Interpret a cladogram and phylogenic tree.
·         Construct and use a dichotomous taxonomic key.
·         List and explain each of the 6 kingdoms/3 domains of living organisms.
o   Explain classification criteria for bacteria, protists, fungi, plants, and animals. Be able to give examples of each.

  • Discuss Darwin’s principle of survival of the fittest and explain what Darwin meant by natural selection.
  • Cite evidence from the fields of geology, biochemistry, embryology, and comparative anatomy that point to shared evolutionary relationships.
  • List and explain the five conditions that result in gene pool changes to describe how species evolve.
  • Describe the 3 types of natural selection
o   disruptive, stabilizing, directional
  • Describe the conditions required to be considered a new species; contrast reproductive & geographic isolation.
  • Describe patterns of evolution and distinguish between:
o   catastrophism, gradualism, and punctuated equilibrium
o   convergent and divergent evolution

• Compare the different types of rocks and fossils. Explain how they can be dated and used as evidence for evolution.
• Describe the Geologic Time Scale and how life forms have changed throughout several billion years of the earth's history.
• Describe the scientists and experiments who helped falsify the hypothesis of spontaneous generation and/or provided ideas for the origin of life: Redi, Pasteur, Miller and Urey, Fox
• Describe the evolution of a cell. Differentiate among chemical evolution, organic evolution, and the evolutionary steps along the way to aerobic heterotrophs and photosynthetic autotrophs.
